For GrantWriters Only

Happy New Year everyone!

I am working with my first education oriented client. They teach Historic Preservation techniques. Does anyone have any tips about how to apply for various types of funding for general operating expenses for them? They are located in a historic structure(s), that they use in their teaching process. The building(s) need a lot of upkeep, so the operational costs are kind of choking them. I have located some foundations who support historic preservation, but could use any and all tips for additional sources for them. Thanks in advance!

Hello, Maureen and Happy New Year! Can you tell us where your client is located and a little about how they are currently financed, i.e. % foundations, % government grants, % individuals. Also, who is already on your radar? What kind of budget are you trying to cover? This will help us prepare a better response for you. Thanks!

Best Regards,
Melanie
Hi Melanie,

Happy New Year to you and all of the members of the group.

My client is in Illinois, but serve a national student base. I have an education in the same field that they offer classes in, so I do understand their curriculum pretty thoroughly.

Appx $450,000 budget: $150,000 from one large foundation, $250,000 course income, $20,000 facility rentals, $40,000 individual contributions, $4,000 endowment income. (I've rounded-up, but are close to the number)

I've been hired for a 2 1/2 month time period (small hourly because I'm fairly new, but they like me because I understand their work) to find operations capital for them.

I'm going to do research at the Donors Forum on Wednesday (that's my first date of my contract), so I haven't really identified any solid leads for them yet.

Any help would be seriously appreciated.

Cheers,
Maureen-
Hello Maureen. Based on my experience with historic preservation in Pennsylvania, I recommend that you look at city/county/state grants from agencies associated with community and economic development. You can also review grants.gov for any historic preservation grants from the National Trust for Historic Preservation that might line up with your needs. And, you may want to become familiar with the requirements of the Kresge Foundation, which we considered for large capital projects.

Hope that helps get you started. I would also recommend joining our Historic Preservation Supporters group and reaching out to the other members there.

Best Regards,
Melanie
Thanks for the tips Melanie. I have joined a slew of HP groups both in Chicago and nationally oriented.

I'm off to the Donors Forum library today and have added Kresge to my list, plus I'll dig into more govt funding. They are in a really rural part of Illinois, so I hope some grants apply to them.

Cheers,
Maureen-
